Lab Experience
SciTech Education Programs are based upon current research being
performed within UMBI. The current programs cover the five core
areas of marine biotechnology research: microbiology, molecular
biology, developmental biology, aquatic ecology, and natural products.
Students participating in these programs will investigate authentic
research topics using the tools of biotechnology and an inquiry-based
approach. Integrated into each of the programs are the Maryland
State Department of Education (MSDE) Core Learning Goals found at
http://www.mdk12.org/mspp/high_school/what_will/science/index.html.
Using a guided inquiry approach to learning, the students are
immediately given a "hands-on" encounter with exciting
materials, such as glowing bacteria or biofilms growing on acrylic
discs from the Inner Harbor, and are invited to generate observations
and questions. These questions are utilized as a guide for the
introduction to the laboratory and as focus material to guide
student inquiry in the lab. An important component of the Education
Program is the opportunity for students to talk with a COMB
researcher upon request.
Preparation for the SciTech Education Program is provided in a
detailed pre-visit package with an advanced copy of the lab. The
packet includes:
- Background information on SciTech and field trip preparation
tips.
- Extensive background information and content complete with suggestions
for pre-visit classroom activities.
- A list of corresponding web sites and references.
- A detail of the appropriately matched VCS or National Science
Standards for the particular activity.
- A student packet for the lab module.
