LMRCSC Undergrads from Hampton University Visit COMB Print Print   Email Email

On Saturday November 15, a group of undergraduates from Hampton University, one of UMBI's partners in the Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC), visited UMBI's COMB center. Also in attendance were Hampton University's LMRCSC Director, Dr. George Burbanck, along with HU faculty members Dr. Deidre Gibson and Mr. Eric Wooden. Their host was Dr. Rosemary Jagus, Director of COMB's LMRCSC program, who gave them an overview of COMB's research related to fisheries, essential fish habitats and aquaculture, as well as an overview of the training opportunities at COMB. Jeanette Davis, a 2008 graduate of Hampton University and current LMRCSC Ph.D. student at COMB, talked to the students about the path that led her to COMB, to work with her current mentor, Dr. Russell Hill. She also talked to them about her research project on the anti-tumor agent, kahalide-F, produced by commensal microorganisms of the nudibranch, Elysia rufescens. Ms. Davis will collecting these marine molluscs in Hawaii in April of 2009. The students were also treated to a tour of COMB's aquaculture research center, followed by lunch. As a result of the visit, one student has expressed an interest in joining COMB as a graduate student next year, and several students requested applications for the 2009 LMRCSC summer internship program.
