Research Overview

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR)

NMR is a technique for determining molecular structure, and can also be used to examine the changes that take place when molecules interact or bind to one another. The technique applies powerful external magnetic fields to align the nuclei of certain atoms and then measures the responses of those atoms when they are disturbed by electromagnetic radiation. Trained specialists can use the data gathered to deduce the precise structure and arrangement of...

Research Description

Research Area: Structural Biology

Research Specialties: RNA Structure and RNA-Protein Interactions, Targeting RNA with Small Molecules, Biomolecular NMR Methodology, Single Molecule Studies of RNA Complexes

Our research focuses on applying high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), together with other biophysical techniques, to study macromolecular structure, interactions and function. Current projects in the laboratory aim to understand the role of RNA/DNA structures and interactions in plasmid copy number regulation and retroviral replication and the structural basis for guanine nucleotide exchange in G Protein Coupled Receptor signaling. To advance our studies, we are involved in developing new NMR and fluorescence methods for characterizing macromolecular structure, dynamics and interactions.
