Baltimore, November 18, 2008: MBC Director, Dr. W. Jonathan Lederer, was elected a Fellow of the American Heart Association by the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Leadership Committee. According to the Council, "The Fellowship recognizes members who are making major and productive contributions in cardiovascular basic sciences." Dr. Lederer is a internationally known molecular cardiologist who discovered the Inward Transient Current in heart while still in graduate school and also calcium sparks, the fundamental calcium signal underlying heart rhythm. He is a regular speaker at the annual AHA Basic Sciences meetings.
Dr. Lederer was nominated by Dr. David Eisner from the University of Manchester, a long-time collaborator.
